Tourist tax calculator for Italy
This calculator works out the tourist tax that Italian municipalities charge on a booking. Enter the amount the municipality sets per person per night, the nights, the guests and the exemptions in its regulations, and the total to collect appears straight away.
How the total is worked out
The calculation starts from the amount per person per night set by the municipality, multiplied by the number of guests who have to pay and by the taxable nights. The amounts are added up night by night and only the total is rounded to the cent, so that no single night adds or loses a cent on its own.
For the age exemption, what counts is the age reached on the day of arrival. With a threshold of 14, a guest who is still 13 does not pay, while one who has just turned 14 does. If the municipality's regulations exempt young people up to and including the age of 14, the threshold to enter is therefore 15. Other exemptions vary from one municipality to another and usually require a statement from the guest, and in the calculator they are marked with the box next to the guest's name.
Many Italian municipalities charge the tax only for the first nights of a stay, for example the first five or the first ten. Nights beyond that number are not charged, and the calculator counts the taxable nights starting from the first one.
An example
A family of three, two adults and a nine-year-old girl, stays three nights in a municipality that charges 2.50 euros per person per night, exempts children under 14 and taxes no more than five nights. The two adults pay for all three nights, so the tax comes to 15.00 euros. If the same family stayed eight nights, five nights would be taxable and the total would rise to 25.00 euros.
Where to find the municipality's amount
For the Italian municipalities with the most tourist stays according to ISTAT, the Italian national statistics institute, you simply pick the municipality from the list, and the calculator suggests the amounts, exemptions and maximum nights taken from its regulations, with a link to the document they come from. For all the others, and whenever something does not match, the values are entered by hand.
In Italy each municipality sets its own amounts and exemptions, in its tourist tax regulations and in the resolution that fixes the rates, which are usually published on the municipality's website. The amount often depends on the type of accommodation, for example hotel, bed and breakfast or holiday home, and sometimes on the season: in that case, enter the amount that applies to the nights of the stay. Periodic returns and payment to the municipality follow the deadlines the municipality has set.
With Roraima the guest pays from their own page
On Roraima the platform does the same calculation, booking by booking. In the property's settings you enter the calculation method, the rates with their validity periods, the maximum number of taxable nights and the age below which guests are exempt, together with the municipality's text and the link to its official source. The method can be a fixed amount per person per night or, where the municipality uses it, a percentage of the total stay with a maximum amount per person per night.
The guest finds the amount on the page of their stay, with a breakdown of who pays, who is exempt and the nights it is based on, and pays it by card. The payment goes to the property's account, like the other online payments. The person who made the booking can declare the exemptions allowed by the regulations for the other guests, taking responsibility for them, and the calculation follows the same rules as this calculator.
